The Department of Environmental Sciences hosted a seminar titled “Climate Action and Innovation in the Textile Sector” on October 15, 2024. The textile industry is at the forefront of global discussions on sustainability and decarbonization due to its significant environmental footprint. However, new regulations and corporate social responsibility initiatives are driving industries to adopt greener practices. This seminar addressed the environmental challenges of textile industry and role of youth in promoting and adopting greener practices. The focus was on highlighting sector specific challenges, compliance and adaptation efforts. Seminar was attended by over 75 participants from FCCU and various other universities from Lahore.

Dr. Ayyazuddin, Chairman PRGMEA (Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association) and CEO of the Pakistan Circular Fashion Council, discussed Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate change, despite contributing less than 1% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. He emphasized the textile sector’s challenges and role in reducing Scope 3 emissions and improving environmental and social sustainability in line with international standards. Ms. Sabiha Shaheen (Founder, Bargad) spoke on youth engagement in climate activism, sharing platforms for capacity building, while Ms. Sheeza Arshad (Climate Change Activist) inspired participants with her activism journey, encouraging a shift towards sustainable principles for climate action.

This seminar was an effort of our M. Phil Environmental Sciences class as part of their requirements for their seminar course.

The seminar connected stakeholders and aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, SDG 13: Climate Action, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
