Webinar on “Sustainable Fashion and Resource Efficiency in the Textile Sector” on 22nd November 2024, hosted by the Department of Environmental Sciences at Forman Christian College (A Chartered University)

The Department of Environmental Sciences hosted a webinar titled “Sustainable Fashion and Resource Efficiency in the Textile Sector” on November 22, 2024. With the textile sector under increasing scrutiny for its environmental and social impacts, the webinar highlighted critical topics such as ethical sourcing, resource efficiency, and innovative approaches driving sustainable transformations in the sector. The event underscored the importance of aligning industry practices with global sustainability goals and the pivotal role of youth and consumers in general, in championing sustainable fashion. The session attracted over 55 participants, including students and professionals from FCCU and other institutions across Lahore.

Mr. Saqib Shahzad, Head of Sustainability at Sapphire-Diamond Fabrics Ltd., shared his extensive expertise in promoting sustainable practices within the textile sector. With over 19 years of experience, he discussed key strategies in Environmental and Energy Management Systems, Water and Chemical Management, and Waste Reduction. He also presented a successful case study from his company, showcasing their transition to renewable energy and significant reductions in water consumption, illustrating the tangible benefits of sustainability-driven innovation.

Ms. Iqra Inam, Head of Sustainability at Sapphire Textile Mills Ltd., highlighted her work in advancing circularity and reducing carbon emissions in the textile sector. With over 8 years of experience, Ms. Inam has spearheaded initiatives focusing on sustainable agriculture, climate change adaptation, and advocating for environmental resilience. As an Advisory Board member at Forman Christian College (A Chartered University), she continues to bridge the gap between industry compliance and environmental impact, inspiring participants with her vision for a more sustainable textile future.

This seminar was an effort of our M. Phil Environmental Sciences class as part of their requirements for their seminar course.

The seminar connected stakeholders and aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 13: Climate Action.
