The Department of English, FCCU, organized an engaging session under ‘The Writer’s Lounge Series’ with Prof. Amina Yaqin (University of Exeter, UK) on September 30, 2024.
Prof. Amina Yaqin focused on the rich history of women’s writing in the subcontinent. Through carefully exploring power dynamics, protest, and poetic forms, she illuminated the multifaceted experiences of women navigating a complex socio-political landscape. Prof. Yaqin traced the development of women’s narratives, from the traditional zenana to the public sphere, highlighting their challenges and how they used poetry to challenge social norms and advocate for change.
By exploring the works of notable poets such as Parvin Shakir, Fahmida Riaz, Sara Shagufta, and Kishwar Naheed, she highlighted themes of freedom, feminism, and the tension between secular and sacred ideologies. Her analysis of the Aurat March and protest cultures emphasized the lasting impact of writing as a tool for social and political activism. As we look to the future, Prof. Yaqin’s research offers valuable insights into the evolving landscape of women’s writing and its vital role in shaping Pakistani society. The faculty members and students from FCCU attended the session.
